New iPhone 6 ‘Explodes’ While Owner Was On a Call
A two-day-old iPhone 6 allegedly exploded in Gurgaon, India, while its owner was on a call. Fortunately for him, he was using the handset’s speakerphone at the time, and he was able to throw the device out of his car window when he noticed sparks coming out of it.
Kishan Yadav purchased his 64GB iPhone 6 in Space Grey from a leading mobile phone retailer at the Galleria market for Rs. 60,000 (approx. $944). While driving, Yadav used the device to talk to a friend he was going to meet on speakerphone.
The device became very hot during this time, then began to emit sparks, Yadav claims. Knowing something wasn’t right, Yadav quickly threw the device out of the window of his car, and it allegedly exploded as soon as it hit the ground.
“My face could have got burn as the phone exploded in a matter of seconds,” Yadav told Times of India. “When I threw the phone, the call was on and the battery was around 70%.”
Yadav immediately returned the iPhone to the retailer he purchased it from, but he was told to take it to the Apple service center instead. They said they were unable to replace the device right away, but he could leave it with them while they waited for a response from Apple.
Unhappy with the outcome, Yadav then filed a complaint with police.
This is thought to be the first iPhone 6 that has exploded in India since the handset went on sale there last October, however, similar instances have occurred elsewhere. Back in March, a Long Island man in the U.S. suffered third-degree burns when his iPhone 6 burst into flames in his pocket.
Last February, an iPhone 5s caught fire when its battery swelled to several times its normal size. Earlier than month, an iPhone 5c burst into flames in a 14-year-old girl’s back pocket.
